I'd feel comfortable giving Captain Joe's Grill 2.5 stars. Staying at the Best Western Whitmore Lake, it was easy to walk across the parking lot to dine here. Captain Joe's has lots of seating, including a huge patio (unfortunately, it was cold and rainy the day we were here). Food was okay, but not great. $21.99 for okay prime rib with one side? Meh. Our server was really friendly, and my kids loved the warm bread (served as a whole loaf). If we were in Whitmore Lake again, I suppose we'd go back.

Coming home from Ann Arbor I found this place on Yelp and we decided to try - glad we did. The food was great. I had the ahi and he had the chicken alfredo. Sparkling interior. Manager had some pretty high standards as he was looking at the bussed tables with a black light and making the staff re-clean. Our waitress was lovely and friendly. Although a bit old school putting the check in front of my husband, and then when I used my card, put the receipt in front of him, too! Definitely tricky to get there... Find the Dirt Squirt entrance and you are good.

What can I say about Captain Joe's? Came here one night to listen to an artist play. The drinks were well prepared and the music was sublime! We did not eat a meal, just some libations. We would return!

I don't under stand if this is the bar side or the Restaurant side either way it's good for the area and its limited amount of establishments

Very nice place. Good food outdoor seating. They have a lounge that is attatched with very good entertainment. The wait staff is freindly. Word of caution pay extra for the booze pass on the house stock.

I was expecting to have a wonderful pirate-themed dinner from the advertisements on the express way. Was disappointed when it turned out to be a normal, clean and modern restaurant :( The food was good and so was the service, just not the way pirates would have served us :(

So I called to make a reservation for Mother's Day. The woman answering the phone tells me that there are no reservations at that time but they do allow for walk ins. I get there 15 minutes before the brunch- NO customers are there yet. I tell them what I was told on the phone. Their reply is they don't know who would of said that. They are booked and no they do not have space for walk ins. They were very rude. So we left- went across the street to the Whitmore Lake Tavern- no reservations- treated with respect and had a great meal.

I had to give Captain Joe's 5 stars because I wasn't expecting much from a place on the property of a Best Western. The predictable stuff first; Michigan Lottery Keno, burgers and country music. The surprises: 12 draft beers with many Michigan craft beers (I had the Perrin Grapefruit IPA); crispy fried asparagus with wasabi; falafel sandwich with hummus. The falafel can hold its own against any is Southeast Michigan with pickles in the sandwich. The side potato chips are fried in house (although they buy the un-fried chips from a supplier). Three TVs over the bar were perfect for watching the Tigers. Staff was friendly and attentive. The place is clean and there is an outdoor patio. Definitely exceeded expectations in all areas.

I was in from out of town for an event and stopped here for dinner. Food here was "OK" but it was the service that brought it from a 2 to a 3. The food for our group was a mixture of either overcooked and/or bland. The waitress we had, though, was cheerful and was eager to make things right for us.

If you are lucky enough to find the place without getting on the freeway north, then you are in good shape. Capt'n Joe's is right off the freeway and looks like it would be easy to find but it's not. You have to jog to the right, on a road that looks like the driveway to a carwash but actually, it takes you around to Capt'n Joe's. Medium dining space with high ceilings makes the ambient noise pretty loud. Great outdoor seating area with a stage for live music. Nice bar and great service. We sat at the bar and shared an appetizer. Good beer selection. Mediterranean sampler was good. Hummus w. pita, three grape leaves and Kibbie. The Kibbie was outstanding - lamb with pine nuts and fried. So good! The grape leaves were ok - seemed a little dried out and the hummus was a generous portion. Hummus comes with two pitas and asked for one more to finish up what was left. They brought two and charged $1 for it. Which was fine but I think she should have mentioned the charge. The lounge is on the other side of the restaurant and looks like it has a separate entrance. I can't wait to spend an evening on the patio with friends and live music. Looks great.

Today was my first visit to this restaurant and I was impressed. From the hostess and throughout dinner the service was top notch. The parking lot was packed so we were worried there would be a long wait but to our surprise we were seated immediately. We started out with the appetizer on special, Which was fried smelt. I've never had smelt and boy was it delicious! for the main course I had their 14 oz ribeye rubbed with coffee. Sounded odd but you could not taste the coffee. The steak was cooked to perfection and had a nice taste. The broccoli and Caesar salad were perfect companions to the huge steak. Overall, a very positive experience. I would definitely return. They have many different appetizers and menu items to choose from including a few middle eastern dishes. Highly recommend.

Afternoon drive to Lake Whitmore from the Detroit area. Beautiful spring day for a drive. Don't be fooled. It's not on the lake, but very close by. Someone else reviewed it "like a TGIF's". Perhaps in look & feel, but the food is oh so much better. The wait staff is great. It's a large open restaurant with an outdoor patio. Again, no view, but likely a great place for drinks and eats after an afternoon on the lake (in the summer, of course). We had the calamari appetizer. Don't look for the typical fried stuff. The calamari are strips not rings and they were likely quick pan fried, but they are served in a citrus sauce with banana peppers and sliced tomatoes. Oh so good. My husband had the Filet Medallions with green peppers and blue cheese crumbles served over red-skin mashed potatoes. The beef was cooked perfectly and it was melt in your mouth soft. I had a side Caesar salad. It was good, a little tart-lemony. But good. The bread mini-loaf with what appeared to be Rosemary or other herb baked in was yummy and served with honey butter! For my entree I ordered the beef & blue appetizer. Filet chunks with onions and blue cheese crumbles served with a think sweet-ish gravy. Again the filet was excellent and tender. They also serve pasta and pizza. A good variety in the menu. We really enjoyed our lunch and had plenty of leftovers for later tonight. Definitely recommend. Lots of families with older teens, not small kiddies. It is a bar atmosphere after all.

We first visited Captain Joe's on the recommendation of a friend in Brighton. We are now regulars for the Monday night $12.99 "surf and turf" - a decent little cut of beef, a lobster tail or crab legs and a side. Always reliable, good, and the service at Joe's is top notch. Their appetizers and desserts are what make our visit every time. Their calamari is always good - the preparation has changed a couple of times, but always served with a tasty sauce. For dessert the Tiramisu (made in house) is FABULOUS! A hidden gem of casual atmosphere and excellent grub!

Was here recently for an early dinner on a Sunday with the family. The place was pretty empty at this time however they sat us right next to the kitchen and waitress hangout. Our table had napkins stuffed under the the legs to stabilize it. Bathrooms were filthy. I had the beef kabob which was listed as 2 skewers of beef and a veggie kabob with rice. there were no skewers and very little veggies. It was tasty though but expensive Daughter 1 had the chicken shawarma, it was good. Daughter 2 had chicken alfredo, it was okay and husband had the chicken shawarma pita, meh. No warm bread was served to our table as others had mentioned. We had the fried asparagus app., have had better. Our waitress was attentive. We left disappointed and wont be back.

We went here after graduation, U Mich, as everything in Ann Arbor was crowded. We found it easily and really enjoyed their food. Delicious! Clean, large portions and great prices. Turns out they have music on weekends too! We'd definitely go here again! Thank you Captain Joe!

So we live very close to this place came here pretty much every week for the last year. Used to have the very best sweet potote fries changed them up okay they are still great not the best anymore. Went there on our date night had food that was bloody raw after asking for medium well to well. Sent back girlfriend had hair in her food she chose not to eat. Manager josh was extremely rude and asked after returning if i was finally happy. Asked to talk to Joe even gave my phone number for him to call me met him plenty of times even bought us shots. No call i called him week later he appologized said he would take care od us next time we were in. Our food was bad didntnget to eat together and spent 65.00! Went in two times joe wasnt there to (take care of us.). Third time new manager said he knew we called so he would take care of us. Taking care was 20 pecent off our bill! Wow thanks Captain Joes have not been back since nor will go back what happened to this place its sad we gave gone over fifty times and this is how they treat us my meal that i couldnt eat the previous time. I took time to inform the owner and this is thanks I get. Sweetwater farther drive but thats now our date night. Be informed he also owns alexanders in brighton as well.

This place is a true definition of a hidden gem. We always pass by this place going down US-23, so it was time that we had a try at it. We went on a Wednesday when they half off all drafts all day and trust me i took full advantage of that (3 talls for $3 each, cant beat that). For starters we had their wings, which was excellent (their jack Daniels sauce taste like actual jack Daniels and it was good, and the buffalo sauce was also great) and the spinach and artichoke dip ( good, not great, however they do give you a ton of it). For my meal i had the blackened chicken Alfredo (pretty good, actually enjoyed it better the next day reheated) and a order of fries (some damn good fries, some of the best in the area). Along with the free loaf of bread they give you, this place is full of treats. I will be back for more beer and i want to try their chicken shawarma. This is the new Wednesday dinner/night out place.

Meat lovers pizza was just ok. Can't pinpoint what would have made it better though. Potato skins were delish! Nice atmosphere for dinner

Eaten here numerous times over the past 2.5 years and never been disappointed. Both carry out and dine in were fantastic!

Been here three times, with two great experiences and one not-so-great one, so overall I give it 4 stars. They do basic things like sandwiches and burgers very well, but their fancier stuff like seafood will disappoint you.

What a gem of a place. This little local treasure is home to a diverse and delicious menu, ranging from burgers to shawarma (watch the Avengers movie if you have no idea what shawarma is). Staff is awesome and the owner takes pride in his place. Recommend this place to all :)

Wow! While traveling along US 23, I have seen the Captain Joe signs and never really paid attention (mistake!). It's kind of tricky to find where their parking lot entrance is. Look for the car wash and you should be good to go. If you end up on a residential street that overlooks the lake, you went too far. The restaurant itself if attractive, open, airy, lots of windows and updated design. Very nice. I ordered the Tempura Soft Shell Crab Sandwich with a salad and garlic mashed potatoes. The salad was so delicious with quality greens and the Honey Balsamic dressing was perfect. The sandwich was on a high quality bun and was pretty tasty as well. It is served with coleslaw on it, which doesn't bother me, but you may want to order it on the side if that is not your thing. The garlic mashed potatoes were yummy as well. My husband ordered the Patty Melt and again, the bread was high quality and it was a good sized sandwich as well. He loved it. Teen had a cheeseburger and he said it melted in his mouth! Little guy had chicken strips and fries and he ate most of it. Oh, I also had a Bloody Mary and it was PERFECT! I have to say, upon driving up on this place, I didn't know what to expect and frankly was not expecting much. I was so wrong! Great, quality food, comfortable setting and friendly service. We'll definitely be back to try some other dishes!

This place is great! Came here with family a few times, always good food and service. The Mediterranean options make it a real treat; I suggest getting hummus and asking for garlic on the side, best appetizer ever!

The food was wonderful. There was 5 of us and we all ordered something different. Everyone loved what they ordered. The place is a little noisy though. So conversation was a little difficult. Service was good too.

Awesome, finally something decent in Whitmore Lake! Great variety on the menu including REALLY good salads (including my favorite buffalo chicken salad), some absolutely amazing burgers on pretzel bread buns, and even foods you would expect to see at a Mediterranean restaurant.

I have driven past this restaurant for the past 5 years, and never stopped in for a meal. I have today learned, that was a mistake! To my surprise, and to the surprise of my fellow eater's. This place has allot to offer! The warm fresh bread, bought to your table prior to your meal, is warm, yummy and delicious. The crab leg's rocked! The large selection of salad dressing's are yummy. The Reuben was a bit hit (specially the fresh made in house warm chips). The Captain's Franks salad is a winner. Upgrade your soup to the French onion, totally worth the extra $1.00. The chicken cordon blue, has a wonderful sauce. And, I really wish we would have saved room for desert's! The desert tray is to die for! Never, would have imagined that this quality of food, is the food that came from this off the road place! Will be back again! Really worth the stop! Take the time to check this place out!

What a disappointment. We were seated around a corner near the entrance from the main dining room to the bar area. The door between the main dining room to the bar slams with a loud bang, so if you are sitting anywhere close to the door like we were, it doesn't make for a very pleasant experience. Our table felt grimy and tacky, so we asked to have it wiped down. Waitress returned with a spray bottle and wipe cloth and after a lot of scrubbing the table still felt grimy and tacky, so whatever they're using is not cleaning the tables very good. I had the chicken parmesan and it was so so, sauce tasted like it came out of a can and not made on site. Wife had the french dip, she loves french dip and was not impressed, roast beef was over cooked and some was burnt and not eatable. The parking lot was full so we thought this would be a good place to eat, but we would not go out of our way to eat here again.

Horrible experience and we didn't even get seating. Walked in and waited and ignored. Then ignored us again then they seated people before us that came in after us. Hostess says not my fault!! No not my fault!! Waving her hands. Then some dude who I can only imagine was a manager of some sort (that seated the party before us) says oh sorry. I can get you a seat in 15 mins. Seriously - 2 kids and wait? This food is mediocre at best. We aren't waiting. We drove to South Lyon. Seriously driving 15 min more for better food was worth it. Now I know why service is bad - look at the management.

I didn't get the chance to eat here but I did partake in some beers on the patio. It was a Wednesday night so there wasn't really too much going on. It sits between the freeway and a hotel. Kind of loud on the patio but after a few beers I didn't notice. The first waitress we had was nice but halfway through our second beers she came over and announced that she wanted to cash us out because she "wanted to go home." Um yeah..OK. The second waitress came over and made up for the first one. She was really friendly and chatted with us quite a bit but I guess right after we ordered our 3rd beer we were advised that they were closed. Right well? She pretty much cleaned up the patio around us while we were trying to chug it down. At one point we were helping her. We felt bad that we were the last ones there. It wasn't even dark at that point so I have no idea what time they closed. I probably won't be back here, not because I didn't like it but I really don't live anywhere near there. Total spur of the moment outing..

Happened to be staying in the area, and decided to try it for dinner. Wait time was a little longer than expected, but hostess was very kind. Manager even came to us twice to tell us he had to parties that had paid and were waiting for them to leave. He was very apologetic and said that as soon as one left he would have multiple people clear it off and get it ready for us. Food was good, pan seared lake perch, BLT pizza, wings, cheese bread all were good. But what made our trip even better was Kelly our server, an absolute delight. Very friendly, and knowledgable about the menu, gave us her recommendations, told us about her "summer go to drink." Overall, good experience, made great by our server.

My grandmother and I had lunch there while I was in town visiting. Despite her claims that Captain Joe's was a "fancy place" and "kind of expensive", I found it to be like a low-end version of TGI Friday's. The food was okay (very large portions) and the service was adequate; neither were great. At least it wasn't actually expensive. Still, I'd rather go to a more homey, local place next time.

I loved my experience at Captain Joe's! We had a party of 10 and they were more than happy to seat us and deal with my ornery grandmother and great-aunt. The waitress, Kayla, was super attentive and very friendly. The food was amazing! They brought out warm, delicious herb bread with honey butter and it was just as good as it sounds. We got some appetizers as well; the hummus was delicious and the Mediterranean bruschetta was really good too! I had the chicken quesadilla appetizer as my meal and it was amazing!! Honestly one of the best quesadillas I've had, especially for a non-Mexican specialty place! Everyone else seemed very happy with their meals and we will definitely be back to try out more of the menu and sit on the patio :)

very mediocre place- I don't get it. profoundly crappy dj/trivia guy bothering everybody all night, pricey drinks (beer and wine, for the location), expensive food for the quality... a decent (well, the only) option if you're trapped at that horrible best western... otherwise, keep heading down 23!

We were in MI for a few days for a family function and stayed at the Best Western across the parking lot from Captain Joe's. What a great treat ... fried, crispy asparagus with wasabi dip and a 1/2 pound angus burger as good as I've ever had. It was cold out side and toasty warm inside. Daniel, our waiter was really good at his job without hovering. If I were a local I would do my sports watching and good timing at Captain Joe's.
